Superman’s first action in Justice League: “Superman punching someone without being punched first?! Fuck you Johns, thanks for making Superman into an asshole.”

Superman’s first action in Justice League: “Superman throwing a guy off a balcony to get a confession out of him? FUCK YEAH, SOCIAL JUSTICE.”

Superman being cocky in (his one line of dialogue in) Justice League: “What the fuck Johns, you’re completely ruining the character. You just don’t get him.”

Superman being cocky in Action Comics: “I LOVE THIS TAKE ON THE CHARACTER. Morrison is taking him back to being a cocky young social crusader, this is fucking great!”

I’m a huge Morrison fanboy, and I dig the direction where both these writers are taking Supes, but I can’t be the only one who has noticed this.

Some of it is about tone.

A younger urban vigilante Superman in a homespun superhero costime is a nod to the social crusader of the golden age.

Superman in Justice League has a one page cameo where he’s setup as “dangerous”. With Green Lantern, the Darkseid creature, and Superman in his armored suit, there’s definitely an alien-as-the-other sort of tone coming along.

And hell, these are only preview pages. Morrison is writing for superhero comic fans, Johns is writing for new readers to superhero comics.

That’s what it amounts to.

Wisdom.

This is Jim Lee’s final cover for Justice League #1. It features pants-less Wonder Woman and a Green Lantern who actually has a ring.
I never thought I’d actually care about the pants/no pants debacle, but this cover just sealed it for me. Wondy just looks so… stupid compared to the costumes that she’s surrounded by. She looks like she’s wearing a bathing suit!
It’s like a whole bunch of serious guys, establishing a tone, then BAM. Cheesecake out of nowhere. It kills that tone dead. It does not make Wonder Woman look like a competent hero - instead, she looks like she’s been put in the league to fill the “legs” quota.

Dwayne McDuffie, the creative force behind Milestone Comics, Static Shock and writer for much of the DC Animated Universe (Justice League/Unlimited) has passed away due to unknown causes.
I think everyone should go watch an episode of Justice League; McDuffie wrote 69 out of the 91 episodes, Including everyone’s favourite episode about Green LanternBooster Gold “The Greatest Story Never Told.”

McDuffie can also be credited with giving black youth positive hero role models to look up to, such as Icon, Static Shock, and through Justice League, John Stewart. I think his hand in comics is admirable, and his skill speaks for himself.
Godspeed, Dwayne.
Post will be updated as details emerge.
